Alcohol and bone health

Moderate alcohol consumption seems to be associated with better bone density (BMD) but excessive alcohol is associated with low BMD, osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures. The mechanism of negative impact of excessive alcohol on BMD is not known but is thought to be related to decreased bone formation through direct effect on osteoblast (bone forming cells) function. Additional factors are vitamin D deficiency and low serum testosterone levels often found in alcoholic men.
